Newsletter

October 2008

Fluttering by: words from the editor

Merry meet! This month, I was asked to write up a blurb about our newsletter for the sign-up site. I'm glad I was asked; the newsletter's goals were never stated to me, so it's really a good idea for me to think about the purpose of it.

Of course, the group hopes that the sales announcements, events calendar, etc, will draw people to come and buy from them, but that is not so much the reason for the newsletter to be-- that's how the members can benefit from it, yes, but the important thing is that the newsletter contain interesting and useful for the readers.

Without arousing interest, the newsletter cannot acheive anything else. Therefore, I hope each edition contains something to delight and intrigue. In fact, reader reaction is important enough to me that I will publish my email address so you can give me feedback. I will be happy to print letters our readers want to share publicly, although they may be edited for length, relevance, or spelling-- if so, the edited version will not be published without the writers approval.

Blog of the Month: Athena's Armory

(note: this feature will have a selection from a different artist's blog every month)

Darkening of the Days

The Autumnal Equinox is upon us, dividing the day and night equally, preparing us for the long, dark days of winter. I am ever grateful for the bright, energetic days of summer and the revitalizing feeling of the powerful sun. But, I also equally look forward to the period of rest and reflection that comes with the darker days of winter.

This time of year, although busy at work, is a nice winding down period at home as I prepare to hibernate and stay indoors more for the coming colder (yes, even in Florida it gets a bit cooler) months. This time of year, the cyclic nature of the universe serves as a reminder that endings are also beginnings. That although things may become dark, there is yet a sense of hope for a brighter tomorrow.

This is the perfect time for balance since the day and night are of equal length. It is a time to focus on eliminating the bad and strengthening the good. Let your baggage go and know that for every dark night of the soul, there will be a sunrise the next morning.

Apple of Discord

by Helen Krummenacker

Eris's apple: To the fairest.
Sweet temptation of the ego,
Shining brightly, like an insect
Full of toxics, sharp and bitter.
Brightly golden, worse than pyrite,
Costing more labor and bloodshed
Than Gold Rushes coming later.
Paris judges, but no winner
In the end, except Fair Discord.

Roast Pumpkin Seeds

Once you've scooped the insides out of your pumpkin to make a jack o’lantern, rinse them off, using your fingers to get most of the stringy stuff cleared away. Take a pan of salty water and bring it to a boil, boiling the seeds for 10 minutes.

Strain the seeds with a collander and spread them across a baking sheet, mixing butter on them so they are lightly covered through out.

Optionally, you can add extra flavorings, like cajun spice or lemon pepper at this point. Bake them just long enough to dry them The butter and spices will make a slightly glistening coat. and it’s okay to have them a little moist coming out of the oven, they’ll finish drying as they cool off.

Put them in a jar when they are done or eat them right away.

Happy Halloween!
